Bricks and Bread spices up KL's hottest foodie spot!

The Brick B

Over the past few weeks, Bricks and Bread has caught my attention on social media with many photogenic spots and a wide variety of food ranging from local delights to European cuisine with a twist. This prompted my partner and I to visit this hot new establishment located in the hottest foodie area (in my opinion) to see what's up as there are so many great reviews online. However, I had some mixed feelings about this place.

Located along Jalan Kamunting, Chow Kit, this cafe is surrounded by arguably a melting pot of good food from Joloko to Osteria Gamberoni. To add to that, the design of the building and landscape made it unique among other restaurants around, especially with that massive brick "B". Honestly, this is where you wanna be for your next instagram photoshoot.

We arrived at roughly 2.15 which was pretty unusual for my partner and I as our lunchtime is typically around noon. The cafe wasn't that busy considering it's the fasting month for Muslims and most people would have already had their lunch by then. After checking in with the contact tracing app, we waited to be seated as instructed by the sign only to be spotted by a waitress looking uninterested to welcome us. Hence, we had to walk in and actually ask to be seated. Once seated, the ordering process was quick and efficient.

I ordered a portion of chicken wings, truffle fries, bulgogi beef rice, and ice lattes for us to "start" out day. Unfortunately, I do have to admit I forgot to put in my partner's order (sorry, honey). The drinks and fries (which were awesome) were served pretty quickly but we had to wait for quite some time for the food to arrive. Ironically, my main (the bulgogi beef) arrived before the chicken wings (probably a half hour later). Unfortunately, the beef absolutely annihilated my appetite as the beef tasted more like wild cattle and the kimchi was lackluster. By the time the wings arrived, I didn't feel like eating anymore but I gave it a go at home (packed) anyway and it was pretty good!

After that experience, my partner and I took some pictures and concluded out time there. To sum up, everyone has differing palettes and expectations where the experience did not sit right for me. I do understand that it is the fasting month and their local spread may taste a lot better per the reviews of other foodies. Then again, quality of food and service is expected from any establishment of that calibre regardless of the time of year and day. Maybe, I'll come back some other time and order something else which may or may not change my mind. But until then, this remains as my only verdict.
