Here's 5 simple steps you can take to lead a balanced digital life!

In today's world, we have heard too many of this one joke about "iPad kids" and the future generation having their childhood overly filled with technological experiences rather thank outdoors. On the flip-side of that joke, we, the milleniels, are guilty of the same thing today. We see ourselves spending too much time on technology, often abandoning the appreciation for the world around us. But, I understand, you can't just abandon your "bread and butter" and just head out into the world around you.

As someone who has navigated the tech world both professionally and personally (pretty much living in it), I've learned the value of mindful technology use. Here’s my guide to help you cultivate a healthier relationship with your devices.

  1. Understanding the Impact of Technology

Before we can change our habits, we need to understand the impact technology has on our lives. It's not just about the time spent on devices, but also how they affect our mental and physical well-being. Mindful tech use begins with awareness of these impacts. One of them I can think of is how we have a shorter attention span. It's evident based on the demand metrics of how the majority of video consumers are more satisfied with TikTok's short-form delivery from YouTube's longer forms. Similarly to our daily lives, people are more fixated on getting what they want NOW which creates elevated levels of stress.

2. Strategies for Mindful Tech Use

Here are some strategies that have helped me and others around my life:

  1. Set Clear Boundaries: Designate tech-free times and spaces in your home. That can be your bed or anywhere around your home which allows you to reconnect with yourself. The real you!

  2. Be Intentional: Use technology for specific purposes, rather than mindless scrolling. Use it for work or research and do try replacing everything else with in-person experiences. Like shopping near your and supporting your local businesses rather than relying on Amazon, TaoBao, Shopee and Lazada all the time.

  3. Monitor Usage: Apps that track how much time you spend on your devices can be eye-opening. As an Apple user, I personally look at the "screen time" report in settings which is readily provided with every iPhone and Apple device.

3. Balancing Connectivity and Wellness

Balancing the benefits of staying connected with the need for personal well-being is key. It's about finding that sweet spot where technology aids rather than hinders our daily lives. For me, this means consciously disconnecting from technology to enjoy real-world interactions and activities. I schedule in-person activities like Pilates with my friends. It comes as a bundle really; after pilates, my friends and I head to a cafe for brunch as we catch up on our week and have a great laugh face to face.

4. Embracing Digital Detox

Periodic digital detoxes can be incredibly refreshing. It could be as simple as unplugging for a weekend or limiting screen time in the evenings. These detox periods help reset our relationship with technology. I am a very active person and hence, I would simply catch a hike at a National Forest Reserve or even a State Park. I particularly like these experiences as I find myself being really occupied with my surroundings as well as me getting to know my body more through physical challenges with the nature around me.

5. Tech for Positive Change

Finally, it's important to recognize that technology can be a force for positive change. From educational apps to health trackers, technology, when used mindfully, can enhance our lives in meaningful ways. To be more productive, I like to use Notion and to keep track of my fitness levels, I love my Apple Watch for that. Sometimes, tech is essential. Just don't get over fixated on the very things made only to improve our lives and not ruin it.

In Conclusion...

Mindful technology use isn't about eliminating technology from our lives but using it in a way that enriches rather than detracts from our well-being. By being more conscious of our digital habits, we can enjoy the benefits of technology while maintaining a healthy, balanced life. So next time you get annoyed with your kid, don't turn him/her into am iPad kid. Let them play with some mind-stimulating games :)
